The Philosophy Blog War
Does anybody remember the Philosophy Blog War?
I've been discussing the possibility of resurrecting the 'War' with Bean, the 'War's' originator and all seems set to bring it back. Bean's away traveling the world (see here) so is unable to host or maintain the site so I offered to setup a subdomain here and manage it myself.
I'll keep you all posted regarding the setup process and when the 'War' goes live.
What I would like to see is some discussion as to what features you'd like to see the 'War' incorporate. You can either use the contact form on this site or, preferably, place your suggestion below as a comment.
One feature I wanted when the 'War' was last active was a dynamic 'Warrior Roll' written in javascript that each 'Warrior' could place on their website to link back to the Philosophy Blog War homepage and to the individual 'Warriors'' web pages. Well yesterday I wrote such a script. I've created a widget that incorporates these features and will also dynamically update with the current champion's website details listed first. One obstacle that I came across was that some free blogging services won't alow the inclusion of javascript scripts. As I didn't want the users of these free blogging services to miss out on such an obviously wonderful feature I've also created an XHTML version too. Details of both below.
- Dynamically updates with all 'Warriors'' website URL's and names.
- Dynamically adds the current champion's website URL and name to the top of the list.
- Available either styled in the Philosophy Blog War theme or in plain commented XHTML to suit your own web site's styles.
- The styled version will also highlight the current champion's website URL and name (you can add this function to the plain version with your own style sheet).
- Requires the addition of only a single line of code to your website.
XHTML Widget
The XHTML Widget offers the same features as the javascript widget but requires the addition of six to ten lines of code. Also, the XHTML version uses an iframe which means that the code will take slightly longer to load. The XHTML version will be recommended only if the javascript version doesn't work on your website.

Ping
I've also just begun some new pinging code that will update servers of the new content each week. Hopefully this will give us a little more traffic.
